 சூரியன், நிலவு, பூமி மூன்றும் ஒரே நேர்க்கோட்டில் வரும்போது கிரகணங்கள் நிகழ்கின்றன. அந்த வகையில் ஐரோப்பா மற்றும் ஆசியாவின் பெரும்பாலான பகுதிகளில் டிசம்பர் 26-ம் தேதி அபூர்வ நிகழ்வான வளைய சூரிய கிரகணம் நிகழ உள்ளது. சூரியனை முழுமையாக நிலவு மறைத்தால் அது முழு சூரிய கிரகணம். சூரியனின் மையப்பகுதியை மட்டும் மறைத்து விளிம்பில் நெருப்பு வளையம்போல் ஒளி தெரிந்தால் அது வளைய சூரிய கிரகணமாகும். கிரகணத்தின்போது வெறும் கண்களால் சூரியனைப் பார்க்கக் கூடாது.
